Finished DA2 today and I really liked it overall. It's true that the same areas were used over and over, but this was the case in DA1 as well, albeit to a lesser extent. Except for the fact that it was shorter and the ending was not as epic as DA1's ending, I overall really enjoyed it - I'd actually rate it above DA1 personally (perhaps this will change after multiple playthroughs), although ME2 (and maybe ME1) was still better :)

Luch isn't getting DA2. At least, there are no plans at this time for purchasing it.

And rumor has it that there won't be a toolset released for it either.

Whaaaaaa......

Okay, so it's *not* as good as DA:O... but it's still pretty good. Aside from the reused maps. I hadn't heard about the toolset though, that sucks.

You should still get it.  :P

Yahtzee is a moron. He doesn't like ANY role-playing game. Anything that requires more attention span than a shooter bores him.

I think he actually liked the original though, or at least well enough to say something about how he played it 25 hours and wanted to play more, which is rare for him.

Halfway through my second playthrough is making me realize it's not quite as good as the first, because it's shorter and the replay value is less. I had a ton of fun on the first playthrough, but DAO was a bit better overall. If Bioware had another few months to really finish the story and polish the game it would have been much better, but I guess they ran out of time and just had to ship what they had.

(ME+ME2 still > though :D )

So... many months later, thinking about getting this soon since I'm more or less done with ME2.  I know I won't like it as much as DA:O but there's not a whole lot else out there, unless I can just deal with it and wait until Dark Souls, Skyrim, or whatever.  Based on what I've seen on reviews lately, the writing/voice acting is still top notch, so it'll still be entertaining, even if they screwed up the combat.  And yeah, they pulled an ME2 with it, making the combat more visceral, but in this case it actually made it worse instead of better.  At least when it comes to the characters themselves, they seem more interesting than ME2 characters, probably because the cast is a bit smaller and thus get more dialogue, but they all seem a whole lot prettier (the best FemHawkes out there seem to beat the best FemSheps from what I've seen).

Well, I played it, and clearly, the gameplay is ages from DA:O, hurray for the dumbification of Biowaree RPGs. BUT, I still got involved enough thanks to the universe which I do quite like. Most characters and dialogue are easonably well written (Merril, Varric and sarcastic Hawke have excellent lines), and if you can find it for cheap, it's worth a try.

I freaking fell in love with Merrill. Ok... not quite that bad, but she really pulled me in. Her quirkiness and social clumsiness appealed to me.

Been playing this when I've had time, near the end of Act 2, although I've watched playthroughs so I already know what most of the story options are.

Things I don't like:
Missable items for achievements, uber retarded.  I just missed one that you can only get during a very very short battle in the chantry and the stupid auto-save system hadn't saved in over 2 hours (but had 3 auto-saves in a 40 second span before that).
Enemies that won't die due to glitching, they have no health and can't attack but can still be targeted and soak up 100000+ damage before finally dying.
"Waves" of enemies during most encounters, where after you kill a few guys another wave (or 2, or 3, or 4) pops out of nowhere.
Companion conversations occuring in the middle of battle.
Realistically being forced to use Anders for most of the game if you aren't playing as a mage yourself, since Merrill can't heal, unless you use 90% of your money buying potions.
Hawke gets a LOT of slack from the authorities about pretty much everything.  Walks around murdering people with 2-3 apostates?  No problem.  This isn't a big deal, but it's only an issue because various characters specifically bring up that they know every illegal thing Hawke has done, but that's all they do, mention it.  They don't even change their opinions of Hawke based on what they know.  If they just didn't know what Hawke does, it would be fine.
The retcon for how Qunari look.  An entire species of genetically identical horned clones?

Things I like:
I quite like how the game forces you to make hard decisions, although it could use a few more "neutral" characters like Varric as it's unrealistic for 99.9% of people to have a strong opinion about something that doesn't affect most of them.  However, it is realistic that on both sides of the various conflicts there are some voices of reason as well as the usual crazies and they do a good job putting some of those in to make the decisions tougher.
Since I'm playing it way later, I like that the game goes by quickly.  If I had paid $60 when it was new I would've been pissed by the lack of content.
The retcon for how Elves look (for the most part).
Both the DA1 and DA2 versions of Merrill and Isabela, they both have their high points, although the DA2 voice actors are clearly better.
The Sword/Shield Warrior slide-charge never gets old for some reason.

Someday I should play this. I still have never gotten more than 15 minutes into it. I adored DA1. One of my favorite games ever. Somehow this one always seemed like it was shitting all over the other one. Maybe now that there's some time/distance between me and DA1 I can give this a fair shot. Or maybe I should wait some more. Backlog, ho!

Finished the game, playing as a very pro-mage, friendly female warrior (Bethany having quite the influence on her).  Used Varric, Anders and Merrill most of the game, as my Hawke was a very very solid tank, and I found I needed the DPS from 2 mages, although threat was a bit of a problem.  The ending scenario is MUCH shorter than DA1, I got through the whole thing in about 30 minutes, whereas DA1 took at least 4 times that long, and the ending is consequently much much shorter as well with no payoff whatsoever.  DA1 had possibly the best ending of any game in the past 5 years, so to follow it up with this was understandably a huge disappointment for most people. The final boss fight is reaaaaaaaaally easy, and a little needlessly bloated, as the boss doesn't really do anything, and I could stunlock it infinitely to prevent it from continuing the fight by interrupting the scripted sequences.  If I play it again at some point, I would want to play as an asshole pro-templar mage, just to be weird, and to let Carver actually exist for once, although it would be really hard to not have Bethany, who is probably my favorite character (especially with her DLC dialogue).

By the end of the game, Merrill's charm had worn off, as her stubbornness eventually becomes so prevalent that it makes her innocence seem fake, like she always knows exactly what she's doing and does it simply to be f-ing stupid.  Her quest line, if you help her the entire way, leaves you feeling like that by the end.  She's still adorable in most scenes, but I don't think I could stand her as a romance option.

I went ahead and romanced Isabela this playthrough, and then never used her.  Dual-wielding rogues need to be controlled manually or they just get killed, as she did many times.  I never used Zevran in DA1 either.  Everyone else was fairly useful though.  Aveline is a solid tank, especially with her passive immunity to stun and knockdown, and blanket damage resistance.  Fenris does good damage and can be a decent off-tank.  Varric can perhaps do more physical damage than any of the warriors when maxing out the Bianca tree and having high Dex/Cunning for frequent criticals.  Anders is the best healer, although you have to sacrifice offense to use the best 2 spells.  Merrill is all offensive magic, with chain lightning and virulent walking bomb seeming to be the most powerful against groups (the bomb seemed to be powerful enough that if I killed its target while it was active, it will instantly kill ALL other enemies nearby), and her specialization tree lets her do constant nature damage to enemies nearby, which is nice when she's running away from all the threat she generates.
